Internal Solid Wall Insulation

Internal wall insulation can be fixed onto studs or directly onto the wall. The method of fixing depends on the insulation material used and the existing condition of the wall.

  • Kingspan board bonded to plasterboard, fixed to stud or direct to wall
  • Thin film insulation using Spacetherm aerogel – varying thicknesses from minimum 10mm aerogel + 9.5mm plasterboard or fermacell, fixed to stud or direct to wall
  • Knauf polyfoam stud system, with polystyrene stud system supporting plasterboard and mineral fibre insulation fitted between studs directly onto wall
  • Total thickness varies from 20mm to 110mm

There are many advantages of insulating your solid wall home with Internal Wall Insulation:

  • The insulation improves the thermal performance of your walls without affecting the external appearance of the building
  • Keeps the house warmer in winter and cooler in summer
  • Helps to reduce condensation
  • Heating bills can be reduced by up to 35%
  • Walls can be decorated as normal with paint or wallpaper

There will be a slight reduction in the floor space of the rooms insulated, and there will be some disruption whilst the works are carried out, however it can be installed on a room by room basis, thereby reducing the level of inconvenience in your home.

Guide price - depending on size of installation, from one room to a whole house, a typical cost would be in the range of £60- £95m2 excluding works to heating systems and electricals, and depending on thickness and type of insulation board chosen.

Surveyor visits property to assess suitability, paying special attention to window sills (which may need extending), radiators, electrics and other items which may need to be moved.

  • The householder prepares the room by removing carpets, curtains, furnishings etc (our installer will help with any heavy items)
  • Drain down and remove radiators, isolate and make safe electric sockets, light fittings etc
  • Remove skirting boards and architraves where necessary, extend window sills if required
  • If required, install studs to walls
  • Install insulation/plasterboard, either mechanically fixed to wall or to studs as previous stage
  • Make surface suitable to receive decoration (tape joints or skim plasterboard)
  • Re-fit previously removed items such as radiators, electrical sockets and light fittings, skirting boards etc
  • Installers remove all equipment and leave room clean and tidy
  • Householder replaces carpets, curtains, furnishings etc

An average installation will take up to 3 days per room, depending on the size and level of items affected (radiators, electricals etc). Some disruption to the householder will occur due to the work being undertaken inside the house, however this is minimised if dealt with on a room by room basis.
